Instructions

The following ICD-9 codes represent the diagnoses most frequently encountered when working with persons having a developmental disability. Having a developmental disability does not imply by itself that therapy is required, therefore you will usually use two or more codes. For example, autism (299.01) alone is an insufficient diagnosis for speech therapy. Many high functioning autistic people speak well and, to a lay person, may be indistinguishable from the general public. However, you may be treating an autistic individual for articulation (315.39) and receptive / expressive language disorder (315.32). In this example, you would list all three in order of their importance.

Listing articulation and receptive / expressive language disorder without autism is also insufficient, because the autism is the cause of the other disorders. Also, the developmental disabilities diagnosis in combination with the treating diagnosis helps to support the need for long term treatment.

Points to remember:

  • You must include a code from the section, "Mental Retardation, Developmental Delays, CP and Related Disorders" unless these conditions do not exist in the patient.
  • Include one or more applicable diagnoses from the section for your discipline. These should be the diagnostic codes for the treatment you are providing, not all of the patient's conditions.
